We completed a very special project in the first half of 2023: On behalf of the energy service provider EWE, we prepared a hydrogen test cavern in Rüdersdorf near Berlin. This is part of a research project. The cavern, which has a volume of around 500 cubic meters, will be used to test the storage of hydrogen in underground salt domes.
Two of our systems were used in the pilot project. First, the test cavern was prepared using our T48 heavy workover rig. It was then completed with the smaller AW21 light workover rig so that it could finally be filled with hydrogen for the first time.
The knowledge gained during the subsequent test operation should be transferable to much larger caverns with up to 1,000 times the volume. In the future, large quantities of green hydrogen could be stored – for climate-friendly mobility solutions and industry, among other things. This is an extremely exciting project for us and one in which we are actively participating in this change.
